The Historic Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta was founded in 1850 as a six-acre burial area with the intention of being a garden cemetery. The site increased throughout time, particularly during the Civil War, to accommodate those dead on the battlefield.

The cemetery eventually grew to 88 acres and stopped selling plots in 1884. As individuals caring for the sites moved away or died, the once beautiful cemetery fell into disrepair.
